Appalachia Service Project ASP

by lindarae on March 22, 2009

My church had a big fundraiser today for ASP. We had a spaghetti dinner and a silent auction. It went very well. My husband and I were in charge so I am super glad that thing went OK!

ASP stands for Appalachia Service Project. This is an organization that has church groups work as volunteers in the Appalachia Mountain region for a week in the summer. The weekly work crews come for 8 weeks into the region and sleep on cots in schools or some place that can accomodate about 80 youth and adults. The effort is to make the family homes warmer, safer, and drier.

I have been writing songs about my experiences in ASP for the past several years so today at the dinner I played guitar and sang about 6 of the songs. Each song related to a yearly ASP theme and was about a true experience of mine. You may listen to a few of the songs bits here on my site. “Appalachia”, “Build Upon the Rock”, and “God’s Amazing Plan” are three of the ASP related songs.   The first two are on my FAITH SONGS album.

I will be making a trip to Nashville this summer and I plan to record more of the ASP songs and will probably have songs for a “FAITH SONGS 2″ Album.
